The pursuit

I ran through the shrubs, the plants whipping my body as I ran past them. The roots of trees threatening to trip me up and serve me to the beasts snapping at my heels. My legs burned and my chest heaved but I still pushed on. I felt my feet slamming into the ground and pushing through leaves. Then I felt nothing at all.

Half an hour earlier I had deen walking with a friend through the Canadian wilderness, losing ourselves in the scenery. My friend, Brian, and I were in Canada for a short break from work and we were loving it. We both loved going outdoors and exploring forests, but we had never seen anything like this before. The giant redwood trees stood like giants towering above us and the cliffs gave views of a never-ending natural wonder. It was one of best moments of our lives.

But then in a small clearing everything changed. We decided to take a break for a while to regain our energy. So we stayed for a while talking about our lives and the trip, and also having a bathroom break. Then, while we were eating, we heard it. A low growl, savage and intimidating. We turned around and what we saw chilled us to the bone. A massive wolf bigger than a rottweiler and way more threating. And out of the bushes more and more revealed themselves until we were almost completely surrounded.

“Run!!!”, Screamed Brian as he sprinted of into the woods.

I followed barely keeping up, with the pack chasing us like the hounds of hell. We ran as fast as we ever had before in our lives. I stumbled over a rock and screamed but managed to stay upright.

And then Brian called and pointed, “Look!” at to what could be our salvation. A steep incline, impossible to get up alone, and hopefully impossible for the wolves too. We gained momentum as we sped to it and almost couldn’t stop in time before crashing into it.

“I’ll help you up.”, I said, “Then you give me your arm when you get there.”

Brian barely acknowledged me. I held out my hands and lifted him up to the ledge.

As he stood, I cried, “Now help me!”

He took one look behind me and said with tears in his eyes, “I’m sorry. I can’t.” And fled like a rabbit into the undergrowth.

I stood for a few seconds dumbfounded, with all sorts of emotions flowing through me. Betrayal, hatred and horror. Then I heard the sound of the pursuers. It was like the entire forest behind me was roaring. I ran before my brain could decide to. I sprinted along the side of the ridge until it fell away from my side, and I continued into the depths of the forest.

I woke up two days later. I was in a pristine room lying on a hospital bed. I tried to move but a hand held me down. I heard the beeping of the heart monitor, and a woman’s voice. Then I slipped into darkness once more.

It was a few days until I was informed of what happened. As I had tried to escape the wolves, I had run off another cliff and ending up seriously injured. Brian had called the authorities when he escaped, and they found me a few hours later. I had broken a leg, an arm, a few ribs and several other injuries, but I would recover. As for Brian, I refused to talk to him for weeks, but I eventually decided there was no way he could have got me up. I forgave him and we are getting along better than before. Now I am still recovering and will be fine in a few months. But I can safely say I have had an experience I’ll never forget for long as I live.
